Job Title: Maintenance Technician

Location: University of Akron – Campus Housing

Reports to: Maintenance Manager

Salary: $24.50-$25.50 per hour and a comprehensive benefits package

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Summary

The Maintenance Technician plays a key role in supporting the daily maintenance, repair, and renovation needs of student housing facilities at the University of Akron. Reporting directly to the Maintenance Manager, this position is responsible for performing a wide range of maintenance tasks to ensure safe, clean, and fully operational living spaces for students. The Maintenance Technician participates in a rotating on-call schedule to respond to after-hours emergencies and helps create a positive residential experience through excellent service and quality workmanship.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Respond promptly and professionally to maintenance work orders, completing a wide range of tasks including furniture repair, painting (outside of turn periods), basic plumbing, minor appliance and electrical repairs, HVAC troubleshooting, and light carpentry.
  • Identify facility issues and recommend appropriate corrective actions to ensure timely resolution.
  • Participate in a rotating after-hours on-call schedule to address maintenance emergencies.
  • Work overtime as needed to meet operational demands.
  • Escort contractors while working on-site to ensure safety and compliance with campus protocols.
  • Assist with room setups, furniture moves, and other special projects as assigned.
  • Inspect vacated units and complete any necessary repairs or maintenance to prepare for occupancy.
  • Conduct daily walk-throughs of assigned buildings and report findings to the Maintenance Manager.
  • Complete scheduled preventative maintenance tasks in a timely and thorough manner.
  • Respond quickly and effectively to emergency maintenance situations.
  • Maintain clear, daily communication with the Maintenance Manager regarding task progress, challenges, and updates.
  • Ensure all work is performed with a focus on quality, safety, and professionalism.
  • May operate site vehicles as needed to transport tools, equipment, or materials and to perform maintenance duties across campus facilities in a safe and responsible manner.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned in support of housing operations and resident satisfaction.

Education/Experience/Skills Required:

  • High school diploma or GED required
  • 2–3 years of general maintenance experience.
  • Proficient with hand tools, power tools, and basic maintenance equipment
  • Strong troubleshooting and diagnostic abilities
  • Effective verbal communication skills.
  • Strong customer service orientation
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and navigate stairs and ladders
  • Excellent attention to detail, time management, and organizational skills
  • Ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks in a dynamic environment
